Originating from the collective misremembering of Nelson Mandela’s death in the 1980s, this effect is now associated with a range of false memories, from the famous Berenstain Bears to the supposed 1990s movie Shazaam, starring Sinbad as a genie. The choice to pit these two concepts against each other highlights the battle of perception: the impossibility of escaping The Game’s mental grip versus the way the Mandela Effect distorts and reshapes collective memories.
